Prototype Consumes Your Money In Exchange Of Some Fun.

Genre Action/Adventure Publisher Activision Developer radical Entertainment ESRB M Multiplayer No

Rating 8.0
Alex Mercer doesn't play nice.

Ever wonder what it would be like if you had the power to throw annoying people 50 feet away like they were tiny little kittens? That is exactly the kind of power Alex Mercer wields in Prototype(Except there are no kittens in the game). Prototype gives you the opportunity to release all those psychotic thoughts that would make any shrink put you in a mental hospital. You have super strength, super jumping abilities, the ability to take on someones appearance and memories and turn you body into different weapons, among other things. There is a catch though. You have a military group chasing after you and trying to make you sleep with the fishes. Plus there are other beings like you who weren't as fortunate and ended up turning into mindless brutes instead of being the ultimate weapon.

The graphics in prototype might not be the best 2009 has to offer. But they more than make up for it in all out gore. That's right peopel, this game is all about gore. The character models and environments aren't the prettiest but they deliver gruesome moments unique to this game. Also the transformations sequences are detailed enough to keep you interested and in an open world game you can't usually expect a lot of detail.

Gameplay wise Prototype packs a powerful punch Tyson himself would be jealous of. Randomly falling from a skyscrapper to pick up and enemy comander and consuming him is about as awesome as it gets in my book. There is also the plethora of upgrades you can unlock and eventually use. There are various side quests that expand upon the single player campaign for replayability. My only concern with the gameplay is the lock on camera. It targets the strongest enemy instead of the nearest one which would make sense in theory but either the execution was off or it just plain doesn't work. More than plenty of times I found mercer doing 180 degree turns to target and enemy that wasn't within striking range while the one I was looking for got away unchallenged.

The sound effects in prototype are just average (No epic opera singers here). Nothing really stands out but there aren't complaints about them either. The story segments that are unlocked after consuming certain specified npcs add a small amount of interest to a story that hardly makes sense and also add a collect them all feature that is common (read: mandatory) in free roaming games.

Prototype will keep you entertained for a long time (gliding is da bomb in this game). The combo system is well designed and the few bits of the story you can understand are intriguing. If you can put up with subpar graphics and slightly clunky camera this is a good game to buy so I think this game deserves its 8.0 rating.
